Let me start by saying that last week Mom and I were about 1/2 second away from being killed in our car. No, I am not exaggerating. We were driving home from work on Tuesday, up a 4 lane road with a center lane for turning. Coming toward us was a sleek black car, going at least 70 mph in a 45 mph zone (per Mom). Without slowing, it moved into the turn lane and kept on coming. It barely missed the rear of our car and slammed into the side of the car right behind us. Then other cars slammed into them. Mom pulled into a gas station and called 911. I heard her say to send ambulances, too. It shook her up so much that now she gets nervous every time a car pulls into the center lane to turn. I was in the front seat with her like usual, and Mom decided right then and there that was going to change.
You may remember that when I was a very young pup Mom tried various methods of “restraining” me in the car, supposedly “for my own good.” The most (in)famous one was this:You can read about it with more pictures here. I am happy to report she got her money back.
Last week she decided that I am finally big enough to wear Lexi’s car safety harness. Not only did I have to wear a seat belt, but I had to ride in the back seat of the car.
Mom said I look so much like her precious Lexi in these pictures, it brings tears to her eyes. I said maybe she would feel better if she let me sit up front again. She said no.

Hi Noodle Boodle. Guess what? I’m up front again. (Mommy said she couldn’t hear the car radio over my panting and shaking.) But I’m still in the car harness. ❤ ~Xena

I hate a car ride and it looks like you do too. You saw an accident? That’d scare the fur off of me!

How scary for you and your mom! My mom was just in an accident that her airbag should have gone off and her back hurts now. Her airbag was in a recall that she knew about but since my mommy is just over 4’10” tall and she has to sit right up to the steering wheel to reach the petals and to see over the hood. That airbag could have killed her if it went off. After all she is as tall as an older child! She is glad it didn’t work!
We need to be able to disable air bags if using them is more dangerous than not using them. The car manufacturers are ok with turning the passenger bags off but not the drivers. That’s not right for short people.
We are glad you are both ok though!

Patzy, we are all so glad your Mom is OK, too. Yes, car air bags are very dangerous, we agree. Ya’ll be safe, too.

Thank goodness you two are fine. I hope the rest of the people in the accident are OK, too. Yikes. I always wear my seatbelt in the car, X. And I am always in the back seat. Mom says it’s because the air bag will kill me. An unexpected bonus was – when I first came here, I got car sick all the time. When Mom got me a seatbelt and moved me to the back seat, I stopped getting sick! Yay! Stay safe, you two. xo

Mommy is trying much harder to keep me safe in the car, over my panting protests, Cupcake. How strange you didn’t get car sick in the back seat… X

Eek…dear Xena! So happy to hear you guys escaped getting into an accident. Wearing a seat beat is a good idea and before you know it, will become second nature. Stay safe sweet girl (and your mom too!).

Hi Miss Monika. I’m still wearing my car harness, but I kept shaking and panting hard enough that I’ve convinced Mom to let me ride up front. She is disconnecting the passenger side air bags. ❤ ~Xena

I also have a harness that was tested for car crashes AND a barrier between me and the front of the cab…somethings about my tryin’ to gets back up front. geesh. overkill I say! Glads you are now super safe Xena!!!

So sorry for your almost accident. I’m glad that you are now keeping Zena where she belongs- in the back seat. An exploding airbag would have made mush out of her.

OMD! that must have been so upsetting!. I am not very good about being restrained in the car either. But I do stay in the back seat most of the time – Mom has a seat extender that makes the whole area flat. I always got tangled in my seat boosters or tethers. Now that I am older she wants to try again cause it is safer

Xena that is about the scariest thing my mom can think of too. Crazy drivers on the road not paying attention and then hurting other folks. Thank goodness you and mom were okey dokey.
You look very gorgeous as a restrained back seat driver

I’m so relieved to hear you are both alright..Driving in Atlanta is a challenge to be sure. Xena, what is the first thing your mom and dad do when they get in the car? They put their seat belts on. It’s nowt only for safety but it is the law. Babies and children are in special car seats that are safety belted to their seats. Don’t you think you are as important as they are? Most laws are made to protect the innocent from the guilty. and you are an innocent little one.
I think it is very special that your mom saw Lexi when she looked at the pictures of you in the harness. Now she knows there is an Angel watching over both of you.

So glad you “guys” are okay. Ray has a harness which allows him to move sideways (across the back seat), but limits any forward movement. I am amazed at how often I see a dog not restrained in a car. It’s sitting on the driver’s lap, or is on the passenger side with its feet up on the dash etc. etc. Don’t the drivers know that it is not safe for anybody on the car? That dog becomes a projectile in a front end, rear end, roll-over collision situation. People!

Yes, it was shame on me for knowing this and not doing it, and she could have been killed because of it. Strangely enough, when we went to get our motor oil changed Monday, the attendant was amazed at seeing Xena in a car harness. He had never seen this before.

Without a doubt a frightening experience! I’m glad you both were spared an accident, if by a shocking little bit of good luck and timing, and that Xena now is big enough to be secured safely in the back seat. Be safe, be secure, and thank goodness you are still here to tell the tale!

YIKES!!! Let ME say first – GLAD TO SEE YOU HERE… that you can repawt it means you lived. That you had to repawt such a thing is a tragedy indeed. What DP/Easy says is true, but it could also be a heart attack or stroke, something which was on our news here just last month. An old fellow’s foot hit the gas pedal in spasm… whatever, the point is – not fun. My angel Jade always loved her car harness, cuz it meant we were going places! You’ll get the hang of it Xena. Safety first, warrioring in due course &*> Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

oooh what a scary adventure… I wish the people who were involved in this crash all the best… and thanks to your mom for calling 911…. maybe the driver of that black car was drunken or drugged? how awful to make the steet to a racetrack with being a danger for others….
